Late in 2014, I began a project to document historic pipe organs in East Texas and surrounding areas designed and finished by Roy Perry of Kilgore, Texas. Mr. Perry (1906-1978) was the organist/choirmaster of First Presbyterian Church in Kilgore for 40 years, 1932-1972. After World War II, he became the regional representative for the Aeolian-Skinner Organ Company of Boston. He is acknowledged as a genius at organ design and tonal finishing.
His masterpiece may well be the organ in his own church in Kilgore, Opus 1173, built in 1949 and revised in 1966. His last work was a major rebuild of the organ at the National Cathedral in Washington, DC.
This project is in association with the East Texas Pipe Organ Festival, and is ongoing.
